Social-X Seminars

An initiative to bring together research groups from different domains to discuss points of generative friction across different disciplines.

Social-X, a Netherlands-based interdisciplinary group, explores the intersection of fundamental questions between computing sciences, social sciences, and philosophy. We focus on points of generative friction: either commonly-used concepts which have different meanings across disciplines (e.g., how does your discipline define ‘information’, fairness’, ‘progress’, or ‘trust’?) or issues which could be conceptual meeting points but are not yet explored (e.g., should computing be reclassified as a social science?). We discuss whether such points of friction creates the possibility for new insights and collaboration across fields, or do they become shared experiences of dysfunctionality that lead to power struggles between fields? Some, for example, fairness, demonstrate both destructive and generative functions at once, depending on the context. With this seminar series, we aim to build Social X’s network, expand the range of problems we can discuss, and explore future possibilities.

We're always interested in discussing new ideas and listening to different perspectives. If you want to discuss an interesting topic in Social-X seminars or know someone who might be interested, then please let us know by filling the form. We will be happy to invite new speakers.
